Travelling and seeing the world is a quintessential part of being a student. Being a part of the Global Student Accommodation (GSA) family, The Student Housing Company is a part of a network of student communities around the world, so in 2018 we wanted to give one lucky student the opportunity to experience the student life abroad.
In August we ran the ‘Win a Trip to Tokyo’ competition, which was the first of its kind within the GSA group. The competition winner would win a trip to Japan, to stay in Hakusan House in Tokyo for a week.
After a month of the competition running and over 100 entrants, we announced our winner. Carolina is an exchange student from Brazil, and a student living with us in our student accommodation in Melbourne, University Square. Here is a recap of Carolina’s week in Tokyo!
1. Visiting Shibuya
The famous Shibuya crossing is rumoured to be the busiest intersection in the world!
2. Halloween in Tokyo
Japan is known for its amazing style and fashion, and they’re Halloween fashion did not disappoint! Carolina visited the Shibuya area on the night of Halloween and saw these awesome costumes.
3. Staying in Hakusan House
Carolina and her friend stayed with us at Hakusan House in Tokyo to experience the ultimate student life in Japan. Our Tokyo team did a great job of welcoming Carolina and made sure she felt at home straight away.
4. Mount Fuji
As the tallest peak in Japan and an active volcano, Mount Fuji is one of Japan’s main attractions. Carolina was lucky enough to see this sacred mountain on a clear day in Tokyo!
Japan is also known for its beautiful, serene temples and Carolina saw plenty in her week in Tokyo.

You can’t go to Tokyo without shopping in some of the world’s coolest, most unique shops and boutiques. Love to shop? Check out our shopping guide to Perth and international student guide to Melbourne!
Carolina covered plenty of Tokyo in her week away and we definitely loved receiving her updates as she experienced what it’s like to live as a student in another city.
